How to Use the New Mexico Child Support Calculator

Enter what you know and press Calculate Estimate. The calculator follows NMSA 40-4-11.1 as amended by SB 223 (2023) and the basic child support schedule effective January 1, 2024.

  1. Enter each parent's gross monthly income.
  2. Choose the number of children and the parent with primary physical custody.
  3. Enter the days a year the children spend with the other parent. At least 35% of the year (about 128 days) in each home uses shared responsibility Worksheet B.
  4. Add the children's medical and dental insurance and work-related child care, and say who pays them.

Your numbers are sent with the form, not placed in the page address, and this site does not store them. This is a planning estimate. A New Mexico court sets the actual amount.

New Mexico Child Support Guidelines in 2026

Looking for New Mexico child support guidelines for 2026? The current schedule took effect on January 1, 2024 under SB 223 (2023). The schedule runs to $40,000 of combined monthly income, shared responsibility starts at 35% of the year in each home, and the schedule includes a self-support reserve (the shaded area of the schedule; $1,200 a month for one person in the HSD rule). We found no newer schedule for 2026.

How New Mexico Calculates Child Support (Worksheet A)

  1. Add both parents' gross monthly income and find each parent's percentage.
  2. Round the combined income to the nearest $50 and read the basic support amount for the number of children.
  3. Add the children's insurance premiums, work-related child care and other allowed expenses.
  4. Multiply the total by each parent's percentage, then subtract what each parent pays directly. The non-custodial parent pays the result.

The New Mexico Basic Child Support Schedule

Sample rows (combined monthly gross income):

Combined gross income1 child2 children3 children
$1,651 - $1,700$229$232$234
$7,951 - $8,000$1,057$1,583$1,883
$9,951 - $10,000$1,184$1,754$2,060
$11,951 - $12,000$1,347$2,002$2,360
$39,951 - $40,000$2,956$4,341$5,058

Above $40,000 a month: $2,956 + 5.4% (1 child), $4,341 + 7.7% (2), $5,058 + 8.7% (3), $5,650 + 9.7% (4), $6,214 + 10.7% (5) or $6,755 + 11.6% (6) of income over $40,000.

Self-Support Reserve (Shaded Area)

If the paying parent's own income falls in the shaded area of the schedule for the number of children (up to $1,800 for one child, $2,200 for two, $2,500 for three, $2,700 for four, $2,900 for five and $3,100 for six), only that parent's income is used, the paying parent pays 100% of that schedule amount, and child care and medical costs are not added. This uses Worksheet A only.

Shared Responsibility (Worksheet B)

When the children spend at least 35% of the year in each home and the parents share duties and expenses:

  1. Multiply the basic support amount by 1.5.
  2. Split it by each parent's income percentage.
  3. Each parent keeps the part matching the days the children spend with that parent (days / 365).
  4. Offset the remaining amounts, then share insurance, child care and other costs by income.

New Mexico Child Support Examples

In each example the children live with Parent B. Amounts are monthly and come from this calculator.

Example 1: One child

A earns $5,000 and B earns $3,000 ($8,000 combined). The schedule gives $1,057, and A's 62.5% share is $660.63 a month.

Example 2: Two children with insurance and child care

A earns $6,000 and B earns $4,000; B pays $200 insurance and $600 child care. A pays 60% of $2,554: $1,532.40 a month.

Example 3: Shared responsibility

A earns $7,000 and B earns $5,000, two children, 146 days with A. Worksheet B gives $550.55 a month from A.

Example 4: Self-support reserve

A earns $1,700, one child. A's income is in the shaded area, so A pays the schedule amount at $1,700 alone: $229 a month.

These are illustrations produced from the guidelines, not court rulings.
