How to Use the Mississippi Child Support Calculator
Enter what you know and press Calculate Estimate.
- Enter each parent's gross monthly income. The calculator subtracts estimated federal and Mississippi income tax and Social Security and Medicare to get adjusted gross income.
- Choose the number of children and the parent the children live with most of the time.
- Tick joint custody with equally shared parenting time only if the court awarded equal time.
Your numbers are sent with the form, not placed in the page address, and this site does not store them. This is a planning estimate. A Mississippi chancery court sets the actual amount.
New Mississippi Child Support Law for 2026 (HB 1662)
Looking for the new Mississippi child support law for 2026? House Bill 1662 was approved by the Governor on April 8, 2026 and took effect July 1, 2026 (2026 Laws chapter 467, bill history). It amends Miss. Code section 93-5-24 to:
- Create a rebuttable presumption in favor of joint custody with equal parenting time in initial custody orders entered after July 1, 2026.
- Set how child support is calculated for joint custody with equally shared parenting time: figure the guideline award for each parent as if that parent were the obligor, subtract the smaller from the larger, and order the difference paid by the parent with the higher adjusted gross income.
The percentages in section 43-19-101 did not change. A new law does not change an existing order by itself.
How Mississippi Calculates Child Support
Mississippi uses a percentage of the paying parent's income model (Miss. Code section 43-19-101):
| Number of children | Percentage of adjusted gross income |
|---|
| 1 | 14% |
| 2 | 20% |
| 3 | 22% |
| 4 | 24% |
| 5 or more | 26% |
Adjusted gross income is gross income from all sources minus legally required federal and state taxes, Social Security and mandatory retirement or disability contributions, minus support paid for other children under a court order. The court may also subtract an amount for other children living with the parent.
Equal Parenting Time Under HB 1662
- Calculate the award for Parent A as if A were the obligor: A's adjusted gross income x the percentage.
- Calculate the award for Parent B the same way.
- Subtract the smaller award from the larger one.
- The parent with the higher adjusted gross income pays the difference to the other parent.
The court may deviate if it finds that is in the child's best interest.
How Taxes Are Estimated
Mississippi's guideline subtracts taxes actually required by law; it has no fixed tax tables. This calculator estimates them for a single filer: 2026 federal brackets and the $16,100 standard deduction, Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500) and Medicare, and Mississippi income tax of 4% on taxable income above $10,000 after the $2,300 standard deduction and $6,000 personal exemption.
Mississippi Child Support Examples
In each example the children live with Parent B. Amounts are monthly and come from this calculator, so tax figures are estimates.
Example 1: One child
A earns $5,000 gross. Adjusted gross income is about $4,060.17, and 14% is $568.42 a month.
Example 2: Two children
A earns $6,000 gross (about $4,777.83 adjusted). 20% is $955.57 a month.
Example 3: Equal parenting time
A earns $7,000 and B earns $5,000, two children, joint custody with equal time. A's award as obligor is $1,088.27 and B's is $812.03, so A pays the difference: $276.24 a month.
Example 4: Higher income
A earns $12,000 gross (about $8,721.83 adjusted, over $100,000 a year) with three children. 22% is $1,918.80 a month, and the court must make a written finding on whether that is reasonable.
These are illustrations produced from the statutes, not court rulings.
Frequently Asked Questions About Mississippi Child Support
Is this the official Mississippi child support calculator?
No. ChildSupportCalculator.xyz is an independent tool and is not affiliated with the State of Mississippi, its courts or MDHS. It applies Miss. Code sections 43-19-101 and 93-5-24. A court sets the actual amount.
What percentage is child support in Mississippi?
14% of the paying parent's adjusted gross income for one child, 20% for two, 22% for three, 24% for four and 26% for five or more.
What changed in Mississippi child support in 2026?
House Bill 1662, effective July 1, 2026, created a presumption for joint custody with equal parenting time and a formula for support in those cases: each parent's award as obligor is calculated, and the higher earner pays the difference.
How is child support calculated with 50/50 custody in Mississippi?
Calculate the guideline award for each parent as if that parent were paying, subtract the smaller from the larger, and the parent with the higher adjusted gross income pays the difference.
Does Mississippi use gross or net income?
Adjusted gross income: gross income minus required taxes, Social Security, mandatory retirement contributions and support for other children.
Is there an income cap for child support in Mississippi?
No cap, but when adjusted gross income is above $100,000 or below $10,000 a year the court must make a written finding whether the percentage is reasonable.
Is health insurance included in Mississippi child support?
Not in the percentage. The order must separately provide medical support, including health insurance for the child when available at reasonable cost.
Does visitation reduce child support in Mississippi?
The percentage has no built-in overnight adjustment. Extended or shared time can be a reason for the court to deviate, and equal parenting time uses the HB 1662 formula.
Does the Mississippi calculator need my personal details or a login?
No. This site needs no login and does not store your numbers.
