How to Use the Maine Child Support Calculator

Enter what you know and press Calculate Estimate. The calculator follows 19-A M.R.S. section 2006, the Maine Child Support Table and the court's Child Support Worksheet (FM-040).

  1. Enter each parent's gross monthly income. The calculator turns it into annual income, as the Maine table uses.
  2. Choose the number of children and the primary care provider (the parent the children live with most of the time).
  3. Add the children's health insurance and child care as monthly amounts, and say who pays them.
  4. Tick substantially equal care only if both parents share the children's care about equally.

Maine support is a weekly amount; the result also shows the monthly equivalent. Your numbers are sent with the form, not placed in the page address, and this site does not store them. This is a planning estimate. A Maine court or DHHS sets the actual amount.

Maine Child Support Rules in 2026

Looking for Maine child support guidelines for 2026? The current Child Support Table is in the DHHS rule 10-144 C.M.R. chapter 351, section 6-2, last amended on February 13, 2023 after the 2022 quadrennial review. The calculation steps are in 19-A M.R.S. sections 2001-2012. We found no newer table for 2026.

The low-income test uses the federal poverty guideline for one person, which changes every year; in 2026 it is $15,960 (HHS poverty guidelines).

How Maine Calculates Child Support

  1. Add both parents' annual gross income.
  2. Find the closest income in the Child Support Table and read the weekly amount per child in the column for the total number of children. Multiply by the number of children (worksheet line 9).
  3. Add weekly health insurance for the children, child care for children under 12 and extraordinary medical expenses (lines 10-12).
  4. Multiply the total by the non-primary care provider's share of income (line 14b), then subtract any of those costs that parent pays directly.

The Maine Child Support Table

The table shows weekly support per child. Sample rows:

Combined annual gross income1 child2 children (each)3 children (each)
$36,000$126$96$77
$60,000$199$149$119
$96,000$255$191$151
$120,000$283$210$164
$144,000$322$239$187
$400,000$620$457$357

The table runs from $16,800 to $400,000 in $600 steps (and $400 steps above $360,000) for one to six children. Above $400,000 support is presumed to be no less than the $400,000 amount.

Self-Support Reserve and Low Income

Substantially Equal Care

When both parents provide substantially equal care, the Supplemental Worksheet (FM-040-A) applies:

  1. Line 15: the higher income parent's share of basic weekly support.
  2. Lines 16-19: the enhanced support entitlement (basic support x 1.5) is split by income, and the lower parent's share is subtracted from the higher parent's share.
  3. Line 20: the higher income parent pays the lesser of lines 15 and 19.
  4. Health insurance, child care and extraordinary medical costs are shared by income. If incomes are equal, neither parent pays support.

Maine Child Support Examples

In each example Parent B is the primary care provider. Amounts come from this calculator.

Example 1: One child

A earns $5,000 and B earns $3,000 a month ($96,000 a year combined). The table gives $255 a week, and A's 62.5% share is $159.38 a week (about $690.65 a month).

Example 2: Two children with insurance and child care

A earns $6,000 and B earns $4,000. The table gives 2 x $210 = $420 a week. B pays $200 a month insurance and $600 a month child care ($184.62 a week). A pays 60% of $604.62: $362.77 a week.

Example 3: Substantially equal care

A earns $7,000 and B earns $5,000, two children. Basic support is $478 a week. A pays the lesser of $278.83 and $119.50: $119.50 a week.

Example 4: Low income

A earns $1,200 a month ($14,400 a year, below the $15,960 poverty guideline) and B earns $3,000, two children. A's support is capped at 10% of weekly gross income: $27.69 a week.

These are illustrations produced from the guidelines, not court rulings.

Is Maine child support weekly or monthly?

Weekly. The table and the worksheet use weekly amounts. This calculator also shows the monthly equivalent (weekly x 52 / 12).

Does Maine use gross or net income for child support?

Gross income. Both parents' annual gross incomes are added to find the amount in the Child Support Table.

How is child support calculated in Maine?

The table gives a weekly amount per child at the combined income. Multiply by the number of children, add health insurance and child care, and the non-primary care provider pays their share of income.

What is the minimum child support in Maine?

There is no fixed minimum. If the paying parent earns less than the federal poverty guideline for one person, weekly support may not exceed 10% of weekly gross income.

Yes. Work, education or training related child care for children under 12 is added to the total and shared by income.
