How to Use the Iowa Child Support Calculator
Enter what you know and press Calculate Estimate. The calculator follows the Iowa Child Support Guidelines (Iowa Court Rules chapter 9) effective January 1, 2026.
- Enter each parent's gross monthly income. The calculator deducts estimated federal and Iowa income tax and Social Security and Medicare to get adjusted net income.
- Choose the number of children and the parent the children live with most of the time (the custodial parent).
- Enter the court-ordered overnights a year with the other parent. More than 127 gives the extraordinary visitation credit.
- Tick joint (equally shared) physical care only if the court ordered it.
- Add the children's health insurance premium and the custodial parent's child care cost, and say who pays them.
Your numbers are sent with the form, not placed in the page address, and this site does not store them. This is a planning estimate. An Iowa court or Child Support Services sets the actual amount.
New Iowa Child Support Guidelines for 2026
Looking for the new Iowa child support guidelines for 2026? On September 29, 2025 the Iowa Supreme Court adopted amendments to chapter 9 that apply to cases pending on or after January 1, 2026 (court order). The main changes:
- A new Schedule of Basic Support Obligations, still up to $30,000 of combined adjusted net monthly income.
- Child care is now a separate child care expense add-on (rule 9.11A) instead of a deduction from income or a variance.
- An updated Medical Support Table, an amended tax method (rule 9.6) and new worksheets (Forms 1-3).
- The low-income adjustment and the extraordinary visitation credit did not change.
A new schedule does not change an existing order by itself. A parent generally has to ask for a modification.
How Iowa Calculates Child Support
Iowa uses an income shares model on adjusted net monthly income.
- Start with each parent's gross monthly income and subtract federal and Iowa income tax (figured by the guidelines method in rule 9.6), Social Security and Medicare, and other allowed deductions.
- Add the two adjusted net incomes and find the basic support obligation in the schedule for the number of children.
- Multiply by the noncustodial parent's share of the combined income.
- Adjust for health insurance, the extraordinary visitation credit and the child care add-on.
Under the tax method, a custodial parent files as head of household and claims the children, a noncustodial parent files as single, and each uses the standard deduction.
The 2026 Iowa Schedule of Basic Support Obligations
Sample rows from the official 2026 schedule (monthly amounts):
| Combined adjusted net income | 1 child | 2 children | 3 children |
|---|
| $1,201 - $1,250 (Area A) | $143 | $208 | $244 |
| $1,951 - $2,000 (Area B) | $455 | $636 | $708 |
| $2,951 - $3,000 | $686 | $1,044 | $1,262 |
| $6,701 - $6,750 | $1,273 | $1,901 | $2,254 |
| $8,201 - $8,250 | $1,476 | $2,179 | $2,551 |
| $9,851 - $9,900 | $1,655 | $2,449 | $2,875 |
| $29,951 - $30,000 | $3,509 | $5,078 | $5,941 |
The full schedule runs in $50 steps to $30,000 and has columns up to five or more children. Above $30,000 the court decides, but support cannot be less than the $30,000 amount. Note: the official schedule skips the $8,801-$8,850 row; for that range this calculator uses the $8,751-$8,800 row.
Extraordinary Visitation Credit and Joint Physical Care
If the noncustodial parent has more than 127 court-ordered overnights a year, that parent gets a credit on their share of the basic support (rule 9.9):
| Court-ordered overnights with the noncustodial parent | Credit on that parent's basic support |
|---|
| 128-147 | 15% |
| 148-166 | 20% |
| 167 or more (but not equally shared care) | 25% |
The credit cannot reduce support below $50 for one child, $75 for two or $100 for three or more.
Joint (equally shared) physical care: each parent's share of the basic obligation is multiplied by 1.5 for the cost of two homes and by .5 for equal time, then the two amounts are offset and the parent with the higher amount pays the difference (rule 9.14(3)).
Iowa Child Support Examples
In each example the children live with Parent B (head of household). Amounts are monthly and come from this calculator, so tax figures are estimates.
Example 1: One child
A earns $5,000 and B earns $3,000 gross. Adjusted net incomes are about $4,063 and $2,641 ($6,704 combined). The schedule gives $1,273, and A's 60.6% share is about $771.56.
Example 2: Two children with child care
A earns $6,000 and B earns $4,000, and B pays $800 a month for child care. A's basic support is $1,270.63. B's income is below the $4,550 threshold, so no tax credit is deducted, and the add-on is $405.37: $1,676 a month.
Example 3: Extraordinary visitation
A earns $7,000 and B earns $3,000, one child, 150 overnights with A. A's share of $978.66 gets a 20% credit: $782.93 a month.
Example 4: Joint physical care
A earns $7,000 and B earns $5,000, two children, joint (equally shared) care. After the 1.5 and .5 steps and the offset, A pays about $282.97 a month.
